Piazza del Popolo

The origin of the name is uncertain however it is historically documented that Pope Pasquale II had a chapel  built next to the walls of the city, thanks to the people endowments ( the chapel became then the current church of Santa Maria del Popolo): as the church actually belonged to the people, of the people became the square in which it stands. Babuino, Via Ripetta and Via del Corso, are the main streets of the historical center of Rome that cross each other in Piazza del Popolo. Representation of papal Renaissance patronage the square was a place for ancient games, fairs,  popular shows and executions and it is now one of the most famous in the world. Today Piazza del Popolo hosts millions of visitors that every year admire the historical and cultural wonders offered by it.
